So you’ve decided to the take the plunge and build a pool!

One of the many things to consider when designing your new pool is how you will get in and out of the pool.  Most pools will use a step and ladder combo.  Steps with a handrail in the shallow end make it easy for swimmers young and old to get in and out of the pool.  There is a variety of pool steps, “wedding cake” stairs, to corner steps, or steps that span the entire width of the pool, there’s a stair for you!   The ladder is commonly placed on the opposite end.

Some clients don’t like the look of the “traditional” steps with handrails and ladders.  In these cases, we commonly use steps and benches to help swimmers enter and exit the pool and have a place to relax while in the water.  We replace the ladder in the deep end with swim up benches.

The easiest way to get into a pool is what is referred to in the industry as a beach entry.  This is basically a ramp from the deck elevation down into the pool.  This type of entry provides a great play area for small children.  If you’re thinking about this type of entry, it is important to note that they can take up some swim space in the pool and can accumulate dirt and debris from the patio that will have to be cleaned out.

Another option is a sundeck or sunshelf.  These are typically a step or two lower than the pool deck.  These shelves usually have a water depth of 1′ to 1.5′ and can be used as a shallow lounging area or for a play area for children.

Personal preference and aesthetics are driving factors when it comes to choosing pool entry and seating options.  With the variety available today, there’s something to suit every need!
